“Dialogue cannot be carried on in a climate of hopelessness. People trying to be more fully humnan not only engage in critical thinking, but must be able to imagine something coming of their hopes, their silence must be overcome by their search.” - Maxine Greene

In October 2010 close to 100 Drama educators from New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Canada and Eire gathered in Auckland for the first International Critical Research in Drama in Education Symposium hosted by the Critical Research Unit in Applied Theatre at The University of Auckland. It was a symposium rich in dialogue and rich in new and renewed friendships. The symposium used the Friere quote “We need critical hope in education, like a fish needs unpolluted water” as our touchstone.

The second International Critical Research in Drama in Education Symposium centres again on the necessity of critical hope in education. Key themes to be addressed in the symposium are:
  • How drama in education can be a means of creating and expressing possibilities.
  • The place of the imagination and empathy in creating and sustaining democracy.
  • How drama in education can work towards creating more just and human worlds.
  • How the possibilities of drama in education might be realised.
The symposium will open with a powhiri (formal welcome) at 4pm and conclude at 4.30pm on the following day.

A Postgraduate day for Masters and Doctoral students in drama in education or applied theatre will be held from 9am to 3pm immediately preceding the symposium. The day provides an opportunity for students to present their work alongside our international visitors.
