[IDEA] IDEA News July 2012

IDEA News

General Council Meeting of IDEA

The GCM was held in WellingtonNew Zealand from 21st to 23rd April 2012, following the Drama New Zealand Conference. Drama New Zealand hosted the GCM and kindly arranged rooms for meetings and offered workshop leadership possibilities to some of the delegates and officers to help defray their costs. We thank Drama NZ and in particular Kim Bonnington and Rachel Steele for their support and kindness throughout.  The GCM was less well attended than usual but there were countries represented that have not attended GCMs previously.  It is important that an international organisation holds its GCMs and Congresses in different world regions.  The GCM was Chaired by Steven Clarke.  The minutes are being collated and will be sent to members soon.

The President visited and worked with IDEA members in South Korea (KADE), Hong Kong (TEFO) and the Philippines (PETA), en route to and from the GCM in New Zealand as well as meeting specifically with Drama Australia and Drama New Zealand representatives whilst in New Zealand.

IDEA World Congress 2013 in Paris – 8th to 13th July 2013

World Alliance for Arts Education

WAAE is an important alliance of arts organisations for Art, Music, Dance and Drama that are working for the benefit of learners, educators and artists around the world.  IDEA is a founder member.  WAAE has good links with UNESCO.

The current Executive Council of the WAAE consists of the Presidents or their representatives:

InSEA (Rita Irwin)
ISME (Margaret Barrett)
WDA (Ralph Buck)
IDEA (Patrice Baldwin)

Professor Ralph Buck came to the end of his term as Chair of the WAAE on June 1st 2012 and the position has now passed to Rita Irwin, the President of InSEA for the next year.  Ralph will remain on the WAAE Executive Council as representative of WDA and immediate past Chair.  IDEA’s past President Dan Baron Cohen preceded Ralph Buck as the Chair, so the rotating Chair has so far been with IDEA, WDA and now InSEA.

Certainly IDEA benefits from being part of WAAE and IDEA thanks Ralph for his clear and visionary leadership, sustained hard work and determination in further developing and promoting WAAE and strengthening its links with UNESCO.   The WAAE has been given a voice on the world stage by UNESCO at its World Congress in Seoul Korea and more recently at their launch of the 1st UNESCO International Arts Education Week in Paris at the end of May, 2012.  The former President of IDEA, Dan Baron Cohen was instrumental in the early development of WAAE and held the position of Chair before Ralph Buck.

WAAE World Summit in RovaniemiFinland, Nov 7-9, 2012

The next major event for WAAE is the World Summit in RovaniemiFinland, Nov 7-9, 2012.  See: http://www.ulapland.fi/?deptid=25256The call for papers has been opened and extended to August 31 for those of you who may have missed an earlier call.

In May 2013 another WAAE event will take place in Wildbad Kreuth, MunichGermany. The meetings in Rovaniemi and Wildbad Kreuth are related and specifically designed for leading arts educators with interests in trans-arts, trans-national, and trans-cultural strategic planning. If you want to be part of informing future international policy development, research, advocacy and networking, then these WAAE events will be of particular interest to you.

Should you have any questions about WAAE please contact the IDEA President, Patrice Baldwin president@idea-org.net

[IDEA] Message for IDEA Day - 27th November 2011

Message for IDEA Day - 27th November 2011

We are all inspired and can learn a great deal, from the many excellent drama teachers and theatre educators who are members of IDEA.  As drama educators we all have a great deal we can learn from each other if we stay open to learning.

When we are involved in learning and creating drama and theatre with others, throughout the process, we are constantly helping shape young people’s attitudes and perceptions, helping them reflect on what it means to be human and on how to live and work well together.  This is embedded in our work.  The worlds we create together are often imaginary and yet can change the way children, young people and ourselves, think, feel and perceive the real world.

IDEA Day can be a day for us to share personal and professional reflections about our work.  Maybe on IDEA Day this year, we can all pause to consider the following questions.

  • What is the achievement you are most proud of in your work drama/theatre/education work this year?  Tell someone.
  • Has your practice and thinking changed at all in the last year?  Why or why not?

The achievement I am most proud of this year, is that I gave up my employment in June to have more time available to work for IDEA.  I have had no regrets.

I learned that ‘when one door closes, another opens’.  My decision to be make myself more available for meeting and working with IDEA organizations and members worldwide has led to many more networking, advocacy and research opportunities on behalf of IDEA and to me being more proactive about seeking them. This has also proved personally and professionally enriching.

My own practice and thinking has been shaped this year by various experiences, the most memorable of which was being in Christchurch during the earthquake.  I was about to speak at a Drama Conference there when it happened.  Later, I watched a film of the work that Peter O’Connor has been carrying out since, with some of the children of Christchurch.  The film of this work, ‘Earthquake: a teaspoon of light’ (on You Tube) coupled with having been in the earthquake, helped me to see afresh the powerful way that drama can provide a safe space for us to reflect on the past and help us build our hopes and dreams for the future.

Wherever you are in the world on IDEA Day, please give the questions above some thought and keep helping others to find hope and bring their dreams for the future alive through your work.

Patrice Baldwin
President of IDEA

News from IDEA 2013

Dear all,

Following your research work linked with the artistic community, we wish to inform you about the first preparatory meeting for the 2013 IDEA World Congress, which will be held on 25th and 26th November 2011 at the Théâtre Nouvelle Génération, in Lyon.

This event will focus on questioning the links between the sensitive and the cognitive and on exploring theatre and dance practices in schools. In order to suggest and analyze different artistic and pedagogic practices, thematic workshops will be organized for participants. From issues ranging from the awareness of one’s body through movement to specific programmes made to promote the teaching of cultural practices in schools, the skills and interests of researchers and practitioners will find an adequate space for exchanging ideas.

We are therefore pleased to provide you with the flyer of the first preparatory meeting for the 2013 IDEA World Congress, which will be held on 25th and 26th November 2011 at the Théâtre Nouvelle Génération, in Lyon.

This stimulating two-day event will provide you with an opportunity to share thoughts and practices between artists and researchers interested in theatre and education and coming from several European countries. This meeting which we hope will combine enthusiasm and in-depth research on the theme of sensitivity will feature conferences, round tables, and thematic workshops based on theatre and dance.

To learn more about this event, feel free to contact us and/or check out our blog :

( IDEA 2013 Facebook Group
